I ask this question because it astounds me in today’s world at how the moral compasses of so many people have gotten completely turned upside down. Where south is north and east is west. The world is morally depraved and it is a sad and lonesome sight, to feel like one of the only (relatively speaking) voices of reason in this amazingly corrupt world. I am not saying there aren’t good people out there because I believe with all my heart that there are, however it seems that as a people we are becoming that very thing that we abhor. I feel like moral relativism is winning out against the absolutes of right and wrong. I feel like the phrase, “the ends justify the means” is an overused and trite.

The other day I was reading a headline that talked about a group of teenagers that set another teenager on fire because he owed them $40 dollars, here is the article. At what point did this become acceptable? What were these boys thinking? I hope the parents would have taught them better but who knows. Maybe the parents don’t care or are too busy to teach them right and wrong, I don’t know their situation and I am not here to judge per se but I think it important that we as individuals step up and say NO, when something isn’t right. I had co-worker that told me she never tells her children no. I thought to myself that is where it begins when we don’t tell someone no. I think we would have a lot fewer convicted felons if their parents would have disciplined them properly or simply told them NO! I think no needs to be told more often than it currently is, and that we should strive for obedience to all laws regardless of who is looking. I mean how can we teach our children what is right and what is wrong if we ourselves aren’t living it.

Don’t get me wrong there is certainly a time to tell them yes as well. In Ecclesiastes it reads, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.” (Ecc 3:1-8) I believe the human spirit can be unconquerable and that we should strive for greater, newer heights in our achievements (instead of our depravities as it seems we are now) and to those individuals they should be encouraged and let nothing stand in their way of becoming the great individuals that they are.
