A few years ago Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gave a talk about the aforementioned topic. I thoroughly enjoyed his talk, it has been a talk that I have read from time to time over and over. I especially enjoy the following, “To all of you who think you are lost or without hope, or who think you have done too much that was too wrong for too long, to every one of you who worry that you are stranded somewhere on the wintry plains of…
According to Islam, Jesus Christ was merely a prophet. He did miracles and prophesied but the basis upon which Christianity is founded they dispute. What it really boils down to is, did Jesus Christ atone for the sins of the world and was he crucified and resurrected? Islam would have you believe that it didn’t happen and that the Koran was sent to Mohammed by the angel Gabriel to correct Christianity. So the question I have is this, which one is correct? Who is right? I mean after all you have two different sacred texts in direct contradiction with each…
I am taking a course during winter break titled “Sacred Texts” now I was lucky enough to take the class when it is talking about the Koran and Islam. I find this very interesting, except the text that they choose title, “The Vision of Islam” by Murata & Chittick is VERY confusing (either that or Islam it’s self is confusing, the jury is still out on this one). Now I have a background in religious studies as I have studied my religion all my life. I have even researched faiths other than my own. I am no expert but I am…
As we end this year and this decade I wanted to take a moment and reflect on this past year. This year we have been through a whole lot of “change” some good and some not so good. In my opinion our president made promises that he has not kept (no surprise there as most of them don’t). As a society we have suffered greatly at the hands of greedy and unethical individuals and companies that feel that they are entitled to more than their fair share. We have seen actors, directors, politicians all behaving badly, this isn’t unusual per…
I took a little break from blogging, mostly because I wasn’t really feeling the need to share everything that was going on, but also because I have been struggling immensely with what to do with my major. I have decided that for the sake of my family and the sake of my sanity that I am going to change my major to Criminology and Justice Studies. Although this major will be significantly more “interesting” to me it will also be more difficult to find a job that would utilize my degree. I may need to get a master’s or PhD…
Today I am thirty-two years old, it is kind of weird because honestly I don’t feel any different than when I was in my twenty’s. Sure my body isn’t what it used to be but that’s just the way things go. Here are just a few things I’ve learned over the years.
Today my wife and I were watching Christmas movies; it was a nice way to spend Sunday. It started with an 80’s classic “Smokey Mountain Christmas” with Dolly Parton and Lee Majors. I liked this movie because although the focus wasn’t on the Savior it was on the family and how it didn’t matter who your family was but rather that you were a part of a family and how you treated your family. The next movie was “What I did for love” and it was about a Los Angeles attorney that had to gain the respect of his girlfriend’s…
Today started my Thanksgiving Break; it will be nice to have some time off from school. Although, honestly I will still be working on school work, calculus is certainly going to get some extra time this week. I want to start studying for the final because if I have any chance whatsoever of passing I have to start now. This week also holds something special for me as I will be turning 32 on Tuesday, more about that in a different blog post. As previously posted in All Hallows Eve, my wife is all about the holidays. I am not…
For my wedding my wife and I received a plaque with “Everyday is a gift” inscribed on it. It now hangs on one of our walls as a constant reminder of how precious the present is, and how important it is to not take the day for granted. I think we often get caught up in the day to day grind of life and forget how important it is to treasure what we have in our life. Perhaps that is what the holiday season is all about, taking time to enjoy the moments that can bring us all together. In…
I think I saw this phrase on a bumper sticker but I think it remains true. When Jesus saw his disciples had departed without him he departed the shore and walked toward them. Here is the account: “And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the…
I was watching Glee this evening and had a few thoughts, first of all I thought it was great when Finn was singing to “his” unborn child, I know that someday when I am about to be a father I will probably do the same. Second, I wanted to comment on how Quinn’s parents reacted to her being pregnant. As I have mentioned previously I am not a parent so I do not know exactly how I will react when something like this will happen. Although I do know that I couldn’t in good conscience tell my child to get…
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be told that you would be giving birth to the Savior of the world? I wonder what went through Mary’s mind when the realization of her role in the world was made known. What about Joseph? What would he think of being Jesus’ earthly father? I could not fathom the immense feeling of inadequacies that would go through his mind. First and foremost would be the question, who am I to be the father of the Savior of the world, I am just a carpenter. What could he possibly learn…
